Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? You’re not alone. Here are some answers to help you get started.
Understanding Your Child’s Needs
How do I know if my child needs support?
If something feels off—emotionally, socially, or developmentally—it’s worth exploring. You don’t need to have it all figured out. We can help you understand what’s going on and whether support would be helpful.
What kinds of challenges do you help with?
We support a wide range of needs, including anxiety, attention, emotional regulation, social skills, and learning differences. If you’re unsure, that’s completely okay and this is exactly where we start.
Do I need a diagnosis or referral to begin?
No. You can reach out at any time. We’ll guide you through the next steps and let you know if anything further is needed.
Is my child too young or too old for your services?
We work with children and youth across a range of ages. If you’re wondering whether it’s the right time, we’re happy to talk it through with you.
Getting Started & What to Expect
What is the atmosphere like in the office?
We strive to create a child and adolescent friendly office. We have a relaxed, non-intimidating office filled with children’s artwork, books, games (and treats and prizes!).
What happens during the intake process?
We start with a conversation to learn about your child, your concerns, and your goals. From there, we recommend next steps that feel right for your family.
What is an assessment like?
Assessments are designed to be supportive and low-pressure. We get to know your child through a mix of structured activities and natural interaction, always at their pace.
Will my child feel comfortable during sessions?
That’s always our priority. We focus on building trust first, so your child feels safe, understood, and at ease.
How do you tailor support to my child?
Every child is different. We take the time to understand their strengths, needs, and personality, and build a plan around them, not the other way around.
Parent Involvement
Will I be involved in the process?
Yes. You’re an important part of your child’s progress. We keep you informed, involved, and supported every step of the way.
Will I receive feedback and updates?
Absolutely. We provide clear, ongoing feedback so you always know how things are going and what’s next.
Can you help me support my child at home?
Yes. We’ll share practical strategies and guidance you can use in everyday situations.
Progress & Outcomes
What kind of progress can I expect?
Every child is different, but our goal is always meaningful, lasting progress. We focus on building skills, confidence, and understanding over time.
How long will my child need support?
That depends on your child’s needs and goals. Some families need short-term support, while others benefit from ongoing guidance.
How do you measure success?
Success looks different for every child. It might be improved confidence, better communication, or more ease in daily life. We define it together.
Services & Approach
Do you offer one-on-one or group sessions?
Are sessions in-person or virtual?
We offer flexible options, including in-person and virtual sessions where appropriate.
Do you collaborate with schools or other professionals?
Yes, when helpful. We can work alongside teachers, doctors, and other professionals to support your child more holistically.
What is the Therapy Process?
An initial intake meeting is held with parents and the child/adolescent and typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. Following this, if treatment is deemed appropriate, children are typically seen once per week for approximately 10-12 weeks. Further sessions may be required, and this is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Practical Details
What are the costs?
Costs vary depending on the service. Please reach out and we’ll walk you through the details.
Are your services covered under OHIP or an insurance plan?
Psychological services provided in a private practice setting (like ours) are not covered under OHIP.
Psychological service fees may be partially or fully covered by extended health insurance benefit plans through work (e.g., Manulife Financial, Sunlife Financial, Great West Life). We recommend contacting your insurance provider for further information about reimbursement.
How soon can we get started?
We aim to get families started as soon as possible. Contact us and we’ll let you know current availability.
Comfort & Trust
Who will be working with my child?
Your child will work with experienced, caring professionals who are focused on building a strong, supportive connection.
What is your approach?
We take a child-centered, relationship-based approach. That means we meet your child where they are and build from there.
What if my child is nervous or resistant?
That’s very common. We move at your child’s pace and focus on building trust first. There’s no pressure.
Not Sure Where to Start?
What if I’m still unsure about next steps?
That’s completely okay. You don’t need all the answers to begin. Reach out, and we’ll figure it out together.
What if we’ve tried other services before and they didn’t help?
Every approach is different. We take the time to understand what hasn’t worked in the past and adjust our approach to better support your child.
Still have questions?
That’s okay. Every situation is a little different. If you still have questions or just want to talk things through, we’re here to help.
